John Glenn Baseball Field – Dedication to Richard “Dick” Reese On Tuesday, March 19th the John Glenn School Board of Trustees motioned an action, headed by School Board President Christine Carson along with many community members support, to dedicate the John Glenn High School Baseball Field in honor of Mr. Richard Reese. Prior to the championship game on April 19th at 7:00pm of the annual Dick Reese Baseball Classic at John Glenn High School, we will hold a dedication and naming ceremony hereby recognizing the baseball field as Richard “Dick” Reese Field. Dick Reese was born and raised in Tyner, Indiana which is a small town south-east of Walkerton. Dick was a member of the first ever baseball conference championship team in 1972 at John Glenn High School. An outstanding shortstop during his high school years, Dick was a four year letter winner and was part of the winningest baseball team in a three year span at John Glenn. He was named an All-Conference baseball selection three times and was a member of the 1973 American Legion Post 357 State Championship team. After High School, Dick went on to play baseball and earn a teaching degree from Ball State University. In 1985, Mr. Reese became the Urey Middle School Principal, returning to his Alma Mater, the John Glenn School Corporation. In 2005, Mr. Reese accepted the position of Superintendent. In addition to his Administrative role at JGSC, Mr. Reese has also served many years as a board member (and sometimes President) with Head Start, Joint Educational Services in Special Education (JESSE) board, and the MASE Insurance Trust. In 2016, Mr. Reese was instrumental in organizing and creating the John Glenn Education Foundation. This Foundation consists of 16 volunteer members of the community. The main goal of this organization is to provide enhanced learning experiences for students at all grade levels. Since its creation, the Foundation has given numerous teacher grants in excess of $100,000. Since 1985, Mr. Reese has dedicated his educational service to the students and community of the John Glenn School Corporation. His unwavering belief, which he shared with staff each year, is the importance of building relationships with students. Mr. Reese states “Kids don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”. This strong belief in always putting students first continues to be a cornerstone that drives the John Glenn staff and students to excel, even after his retirement in 2019. Dick Reese will always be a Falcon, tried and true. He was one of the biggest fans and supporters of John Glenn Athletics. Mr. Reese was always in attendance at sporting events, fine arts productions, and special activities like school fairs, and of course, Falloween. Dick is often thought of as the John Glenn #1 Super Fan because he never missed an activity, regardless of the event. Dick passed away in the spring of 2022 after enjoying watching his beloved Falcons win a Baseball Sectional. It was truly a proud moment for Mr. Reese as he celebrated with the team. Recently, Cathy Reese and her family donated $150,000 toward lights at the baseball field in honor of Mr. Reese and his love for baseball and John Glenn. We are proud to dedicate the naming of the John Glenn Baseball Field on Saturday, April 19th and will celebrate Mr. Reese’s memory with his wife Cathy and three children; Adam, Diane and Eric as well as his 5 grandchildren.
